Tarmac supports Britain’s local authorities, providing a full range of services to support the UK’s road network 24/7, 365 days a year.
Depending on the needs of our client service this can include everything from routine maintenance of roads, street lighting and drainage to helping our clients to manage and improve their highways assets. This can mean improving the long term durability of roads to improving safety and visibility at key junctions.
We don’t just work for our customers, we work with them, helping them plan and manage their budgets to provide cost certainty, recruiting and benchmarking local suppliers and sharing best practice across the supply chain. We have long standing partnering agreements with major clients across the UK, including Leicester, Nottingham and Walsall Councils.?The contracts are designed to encourage innovation and efficiency savings by sharing resources, best practice, knowledge and developing multi-disciplined integrated teams.
Community Engagement, Leicestershire 2013

Grass Cutting, Leicestershire
Tarmac Contracting have been working in partnership with both Leicestershire County Council (LCC) and Leicestershire Highways Organisation (LHO) on the LHWA since the beginning of 2008. The LHWA contract was for an initial four year period with the opportunity of 3 one year extension periods, the second of which commences in April 2014.
Soil Stabilisation, Leicestershire
Having worked in partnership with Leicestershire County Council since 2008, the client approached us for a sustainable solution to road construction that minimised traffic movements, caused less disruption and contributed to CO2 savings.
GIS Mapping, Walsall
Working alongside KaarbonTech, who provide data collection, maintenance advice and flood risk analysis, an initial data collection exercise was carried out within the existing costs, over 2 years from 2013-15 so that a ‘needs based’ flexible cleaning regime could be adopted.
Tarmac Contracting offer a complete winter maintenance service. We can help you make cost savings on salt provision, provide a 24/7 precautionary and emergency gritter service, maintain grit bins throughout your network and repair frost damage on roads and footpaths.
Following thorough a review of winter maintenance services with Walsall Borough Council, we introduced a new, optimized route plan and replaced the councils old gritting machines with a fleet of new multi-purpose vehicles that can used for essential highway maintenance tasks all year round. As a result the council saved over ￡250,000.
Our emergency crews are on standby 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, offering a rapid resolution to a whole range of issues from helping to keep roads safe following road traffic collisions, flooding or vandalism to repairing potholes.
Landscaping & Grass Cutting
We can do everything from hard landscaping as part of urban regeneration projects to cutting grass verges and trimming hedgerows.
As part of our contract with Leicestershire County Council we cut over fifteen million square metres of grass a year.
Flooding has become a high profile issue in recent years. Preventative maintenance is vital to reduce the impact of flooding, preventing disruption to road users. Our gulley emptying teams can maintain whole networks, cleaning tens of thousands of gulleys a year. Our state-of-the-art gulley emptiers are equipped with powerful jets, vacuums and tracking tools to record mapping data, which is then used to manage costs and reduce liabilities.
Our experienced teams can install and repair everything from crash and sound barriers to bollards, guard rails and safety fencing.?
Street lighting and Signage
Tarmac Contracting can provide a comprehensive solution to street lighting and signage. This includes surveying existing highways assets, designing new road layouts, installing new road signs or street lighting and providing a cost effective maintenance service to clean signs and replace lamps.
At Tarmac we’ve recently developed a bespoke process that captures various pieces of data from our road surfacing projects that can then be analysed to provide a report back to clients.
We collect data from the laying process with sensors on paving and compaction equipment, which provides us with details about the quality of everything from the materials we use to the influence of weather conditions.
This immediately provides us with useful information in real time about how to improve laying and compaction quality on the job in question. But it also allows us to go into a deeper analysis that can feed in to improving performance in the longer term.
It can also provide a better understanding of the use of different materials, different contractors, and even the different conditions in which roads are laid. And it has sustainability benefits, too, as it can help us to understand the quantity and quality of asphalt that we can recycle in the future. Combined with other construction data, this helps to support a circular economy model by minimising waste and promoting material efficiency.
Benefits to the local community
In 2015, for instance, we were awarded a two-year extension on the annual ￡12 million highways maintenance contract with Nottinghamshire County Council. The contract includes a commitment from us to support and invest in the local economy, delivering 90% of the work using local workers and suppliers.
On a wider scale, we’ve been able to work with the council to identify efficiency gains that have delivered more than ￡2 million in annual cost savings since the contract began in 2013. That money has been reinvested by the council into other local road improvement initiatives, benefiting the local community even further.
