At Tarmac we pride ourselves on our design and technical capabilities. ?These are both growing from strength to strength and with more early contractor involvement we can help deliver the required outcomes for our clients. ?
Early Contractor Involvement
At Tarmac we believe that the best results are more easily achieved through early contractor involvement. Working together we can identity the challenges, utilise combined expertise and deliver works that meet programme and customer requirements.?
Most recently on the A2 Bean to Bluewater, ECI initiated works that would reduce programme times and network disruption. Instead of completing the work during night shifts, the carriageway would be fully closed over the Easter weekend, when average traffic volumes would be lower. Using an ULTILOW warm mix binder course, supplied and laid at a lower temperature, allowed the carriageway to be resurfaced in two deeper layers rather than three layers as originally planned, which significantly reduced construction times.
This approach reduced the initial 53 day programme by 24 days and delivered a ￡400,000 cost saving for Highways England.?
National Technical Centre
Our National Technical Centre at Ettingshall near Wolverhampton has developed a range of industry leading asphalts that are helping to raise standards of durability and paving efficiency while improving sustainability and reducing environmental impact.
Our ULTILOW range of asphalts won Highways Industry Product of the Year at the 2015 Highways Magazine Excellence Awards.
They reach trafficking temperatures sooner, enabling larger sections of pavement to be laid in a single shift and road closures to be minimised. They can also deliver carbon footprint savings of up to 25% compared to hot mix equivalents.
Tarmac?Ultilayer SAMI?asphalt interlayer is another example of this innovation. Developed after extensive research and testing, it resists cracking of asphalt overlays in concrete based pavements.
Our experienced technical team ensure the quality and consistency of the asphalts supplied through our network of UK asphalt plants. They also offer advice and support to customers to help them benefit from the latest asphalt technology and advise on pavement designs for specific projects.
Award winning materials
Tarmac's ULTILOW range of asphalts won Highways Industry Product of the Year at the 2015 Highways Magazine Excellence Awards. Brian Kent, National Technical Director in Aggregates and Asphalt, said: “It was fantastic to receive industry recognition for the development and subsequent market introduction of low temperature asphalts in the UK. The benefits are clear for all parties – supplier, contractor, client and the public, therefore we’re proud to have delivered such a sustainable solution for our customers.”
